On Sunday 29 September, it’s World Heart Day, a day to celebrate our wonderful heart and all that it does to keep us alive.

World Heart Day is focusing on using our ‘Heart for Action’, that is, it’s encouraging individuals to not only care for their heart, but to also urge leaders to develop or support national cardiovascular health action plans.

This day not only aims to raise awareness about heart health, but is also encouraging us to take action and reduce our cardiovascular risk by making heart healthy choices.

Globally and in Australia, heart disease is the leading cause of death, however the risk of developing heart disease CAN be prevented and reduced.

Did you know that at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided?

Developing some healthy habits every day can help us achieve a healthy heart.

So what can we do?

  • reduce the intake of alcohol
  • quit smoking
  • eat a nutritious and healthy diet
  • maintain a healthy weight
  • keep blood pressure in check
  • reduce cholesterol
  • exercise on a regular basis
  • manage stress in healthy and productive ways

Take a look at this short video which nicely summarises how we can keep our heart happy and healthy…

What action could you take today and every day to protect your heart?
